Illuminating the holidays for less

Illuminating the holidays for less

Strings of yellow holiday lights wrapped around tree branches

’Tis the season for swirling snowflakes, hot cocoa and decorations. This year, as you hang your holiday lights, we’d like to offer a few ideas to make them even brighter, and to help you save a few dollars while you’re at it.

For starters, if you haven’t replaced your traditional incandescent holiday lights with energy-efficient LED strands, this is the year to do it. Not only do LEDs consume less electricity, but they’re also made to be safer and sturdier. If you purchase ENERGY STAR® decorative bulbs, some have a manufacturer warranty of up to three years. They’re also a cinch to install.

Here’s the best part — many holiday LED strands don’t just shine brighter, but they also come in a wide array of changeable colors and patterns that can be synced to music.

Magnify the shine

Glass snowflakes and ornaments that are reflecting sparkles of light

Making the switch to holiday LEDs isn’t the only way to save energy this time of year. Once the lights are strung, here are a couple of other ideas. First, try amplifying the light by adding sparkle — hang small, mirrored objects that will catch the glow and reflect it. That way, you can get a brighter feel without adding extra lights. Next, cozy up the place by adding natural garlands, wreaths and ribbons, which don’t require any energy beyond your own.

Timing’s everything

Finally, use energy-efficient smart power strips and timers to automatically turn displays on and off, inside and out.

P.S. Decorate cookies, too.

Once the house is spruced, take some time to decorate some no-bake cookies. You can keep the holiday energy up, while keeping the oven off. And remember, when the guests arrive to see your décor, turn the thermostat down a degree or two as more warm bodies in the house will naturally raise the temperature. Pretty cool, huh?

There you have it. The makings of a brilliant holiday.

You can find discounted LED lightbulbs, smart power strips and more on our online marketplace.

Energy costs are rising. Shop smart and save.

Energy costs are rising. Shop smart and save.

We’ve noticed that the prices of many energy supply sources are on the rise due to external market conditions, including overall inflation. But if you’ve been to the store lately, you’ve probably noticed that prices are going up on almost everything.

Just like you’d shop around for the best price on everyday goods, it’s important to know that you can do the same with your electricity supply.  And now is a good time to shop for an electricity supplier as you may be able to avoid or minimize these cost increases.

Shopping Explained

PPL Electric Utilities delivers your electricity, but we don’t own or operate the power plants where that electricity is generated. In Pennsylvania, you can shop around and choose the electricity supplier that is right for you.

When you do venture into the electricity marketplace, remember to shop smart.

  • Beware of variable rates, which start small and then increase depending on the price of power.
  • Watch out for deceptive marketing tactics and hidden early termination fees, and always be sure to read the fine print on any contract you sign with a supplier.
  • Review your most recent bill to check the price to compare, as well as your current rate if you’re already shopping, so you can make an informed decision on a new electricity supplier.

If you choose not to shop, are enrolled on our OnTrack program, or cancel with an existing supplier without choosing a new one, you’ll automatically pay the price to compare, also known as the PPL default rate. This rate changes every June 1 and December 1 and is updated on our website.

Your Options

Standard Offer Program

  • Participating suppliers offer a 7% discount off the price to compare, at a fixed price for a year, with no early cancellation fees.
  • Access your online account and enroll in the Standard Offer Program by December 1 to take advantage of the 7% discount off the existing price to compare.

Choose a Supplier

  • Check out papowerswitch.com to find a supplier that offers the service, energy source and price that’s right for you.
  • When you sign up with a new supplier, they’ll notify us to make the switch.

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Scammers.

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Scammers.

Oftentimes, door-to-door scammers will misrepresent themselves. Not only their identity, but they will also misrepresent what their true intentions are. In those situations, scammers are generally looking to obtain your personal and account information to switch your electricity supplier without your knowledge.

We deliver your electricity, but in Pennsylvania, you can shop around for the supplier that’s right for you. While most suppliers market their services appropriately, some use fraudulent tactics – like misrepresenting themselves as PPL or offering too-good-to-be-true deals – to scam you out of your hard-earned money.

We do not sell supplier services door-to-door. So, if a solicitor is claiming to represent PPL Electric Utilities, you can be sure they are attempting to fool you.

If you want to listen to what the door-to-door salesperson has to say, you can, but the best place to start the shopping process is on our website, pplelectric.com/shopsmart, or by visiting the Public Utility Commission’s site at PAPowerSwitch.com.

Here are some tips to help you identify and slam the door on scammers:

  • Scammers will generally pressure you to act fast, don’t let fast-talking push you to give up personal information or make a decision on the spot.
  • If someone knocks, claims to be from PPL, and asks for money or for you to sign a contract, don’t do it. We never solicit services or demand payments door-to-door. Tell them you don’t have time to talk and that you’ll be calling us later to discuss.
  • Remember, if something doesn’t seem right when talking to a door-to-door salesperson, or something seems too good to be true, it likely is.
  • Know what questions to ask when switching suppliers: What is the length of the agreement? Is there an automatic renewal? Are there cancellation, change, or penalty fees? Is this an introductory rate? What is the price after the introductory period?
  • Spread the word. If a scammer tries to target you, they may also try to target others in your community. Let neighbors know they should keep an eye out for scammers.
  • Creating an online account is a great way to avoid scams. You can check your account information and current electricity supplier at any time, from any device at pplelectric.com.
The faces of scams

The faces of scams

What does a utility scam look like? We think these emojis will help you remember!

If you know what to watch for, you’ll never have to look worried, like this:

# # # # #

“Pay now or we’ll cut you off.”

Scammers say this; we don’t. If you are at any risk of losing service, we’ll give you plenty of notice. You won’t be surprised by a phone call threatening imminent shutoff.

# # # # #

“Go get a prepaid card.”

Scammers often insist that you have to pay with prepaid cards or digital payment apps, because it’s convenient for them. We don’t pressure you to use these types of payments.

# # # # #

“This is a fee to connect your meter.”

Scammers sometimes make this claim. Any meter-related costs you have to pay are included as part of your bill. There’s no extra fee to get a meter fixed, replaced or connected.

“But I said–” *click*

Don’t be scared, pressured or intimidated by scam phone calls. Just hang up. Call your local police if you feel threatened.
